are made up of surfactants (molecules that are half solid and half liquid). Most surfactants are made using petroleum distillates like phosphates, silicates, and carbonates. Some are made using ammonia, sulfur, and soda. Still others are made using vegetable oils like coco oil to replace the petroleum distillates. Surfactants work best at a pH of 9 or greater. Things that are alkaline tend to be slimy and sticky. Bar soap for instance is alkaline. If you were to wash your hands and not rinse the soap off, your hands would be covered with an alkaline residue. Alkaline residue can be neutralized by acidic solutions. A good example of this is the conditioner that you use on your hair. Shampoo leaves an alkaline residue on your hair, the conditioner is acidic so it neutralizes the alkaline.
