The Method
The Naturell method of cleaning carpet is very different from the conventional method. One major difference is the amount of moisture we use. We use about 2 gallons to clean an area that the conventional method would use about 40 gallons to clean, this equates to an average of 20 times less moisture. There are two reasons the conventional method uses so much more moisture:
1) the conventional method is based on the same technology used to clean driveways and engines. Hot water and detergents are sprayed into the carpet under high pressure to blast dirt loose.
2) To rinse out the oil based Detergents. Even the new generation of detergents made with vegetable oil or orange oil is oil based. Oil plus carpet fiber equals sticky residue that attracts more dirt and must be rinsed out using plenty of water.
In our quest to develop a better way to clean carpet we made several observations:
1) High pressure spraying is not the only or necessarily the best way to clean, especially soft surfaces like carpet because too much liquid is often left behind.
2) Oil based alkaline detergent is hard to rinse out of laundry even with three rinse cycles, it is even harder to rinse out of carpet which can't be submerged in a drum of water and spun dry.
3) Chemicals don't just go away after you are finished using them, they often end up back in the environment or in the indoor environment of your home.
Low moisture methods similar to ours have been around for many years and they have received criticism from conventional method advocates. The most common criticism is that they are unable to clean very deeply, this is incorrect. They are able to clean to the base of the fibers which is the deepest any method is able to clean. A more correct criticism would be that they often use oil based and or alkaline detergents with no means of rinsing them back out. The result is often spots that re-occur rapidly and rapid re-soiling.
The major difference between the Naturell method and other low moisture methods is our patented cleaning product containing enzymes and biosurfactants derived from sea kelp. It is protein based rather than oil based, and it is non-alkaline. The best way to avoid leaving a sticky residue is simply not to put anything sticky into the carpet.
At one time the conventional method for treating illness was bloodletting. If you were to tell people of that time that their cure could potentially cause conditions worse than the ones they were attempting to solve, you would have been considered foolish. It is our hope that someday people will look back at today’s conventional methods for cleaning carpet and realize that the same could be said.
